scavenger library
Tiny Library, VolumeZero Competitions | 2020

PROJECT BRIEF
Scavenger Library is a design proposal for a competition hosted by VolumeZero Competitions for a concept of a Tiny Library. This project is a collaborative effort between four other designers. The project brief called for a tiny library designed for a chosen local community with a focus on public interactions and community development.

CONCEPT
The Scavenging Library’s purpose is to act as a catalyst for the residents’ livelihoods to be integrated in accordance with their mutualism need for change in the slums. Smokey Mountain is one of the largest dumpsites in Manila where 20,000 of the poor living in the slums make their living through picking up garbage. The library’s role of ‘Scavenging for Knowledge’ has a 4 step process which aims to educate the children about the stages of recycling and upcycling, turning play into profit. Ultimately, The Scavenging Library aims to be an incubator for a playful discovery and exchange of knowledge in sustainable artisanal craft-making.
